STUDENTS WITH EXCEPTIONALITIES DESERVE A FREE AND APPROPRIATE PUBLIC EDUCATION
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (2004)
The primary purpose of special education is to prepare students with disabilities for meaningful postsecondary opportunities, including higher education, competitive employment, and independent living. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA, 2004) serves as a foundational federal law that ensures students with disabilities have access to a free appropriate public education comparable to that of their peers without disabilities.
Under IDEA, schools are required to provide services in the least restrictive environment. This means that, to the maximum extent appropriate, students with disabilities are educated alongside their nondisabled peers in general education settings. Placement decisions are guided by individual needs and supported through evidence-based accommodations, modifications, and supplementary aids and services.
When these supports are thoughtfully implemented, students with disabilities can achieve high levels of academic and social success. Equally important, they are better positioned to transition successfully into adulthood, where they can participate fully in education, employment, and community life.
